|Description:||Bushido is an oriental fantasy tabletop miniature battle game for two players. Each player commands a force of no more than a handful of individuals, represented by 32mm metal miniatures. These forces meet on the battlefield and the commanders (the players, that is) try to outwit, outfight and outlive the opposing force and fulfil their battle objectives while denying the enemy theirs. If you have played tabletop miniature games before, Bushido falls into the "skirmish game" category: all miniatures represent individuals and your force consists of a small group of unique characters rather than a big faceless army. A game of Bushido is fast-moving, flexible and filled with strategizing, counter-strategizing and counter-counter-strategizing. Your tactical acumen is important, but as dice add an element of randomness, so too is your ability to think on your feet. A typical game of Bushido takes between one and two hours to play – more if you are new to the game, less if you are a seasoned veteran.|

Name, Rank, and Number! June 21
Welcome to another of our ‘Behind the Scenes’ articles, which spotlight who does what, how, when, and where. This one is someone everyone knows, the elusive, enigmatic, and Tournament winning, Master Enos!
Full nameMaster Enos
How long have you been a fan of Bushido?Dave from Fanboy3 bought a few copies of each original starter set back from UK Games Expo one year. My brother and I bought some and I’ve been playing ever since.
What got you into Bushido in the first place?Master Ekusa. Who can pass up a monk sat on a tortoise? When the New Dawn edition was released, we also really enjoyed the mechanics; the bluffing, mind games and resolution of melee is still the best there is, a whole game in itself.
What role -- if any -- do you play in the production of Bushido?I am the Developer for GCT; I write profiles, rules and expansions to the rules. Sometimes I am involved in new concepts, and I have started to concept whole new factions for the game.
Player? Painter? Or Collector?Always player first, but I try to play full painted armies, and I can’t stop until I have everything!
Favourite Faction/s?I played Temple for a long time and won the Grand Masters with them, so they are always one of “My” factions. Minimoto were the first faction I wrote all of, including how the profiles are skewed in certain ways and how the faction will play. I can’t help but like my own creation, can I?
Favourite Model/s?I still like Ekusa; looking at the studio paintjobs doesn’t help. Sakura from the Ito range is amazing; Hotaru is another dynamic sculpt that draws a lot of people in. I love how much effort went into the tengu to make each type different and close to its bird counterpart. The quality just keeps increasing; the Wolf and Yuta boxes are some of the best miniatures we’ve done.
Competitive Player? Or Harry Casual?I do like a tournament ☺
Battle Plans for when the Plague is over?I expect to be playing and organising some events at Element games as well as trying things I’m not allowed to talk about!
What’s on the painting station, hopefully not gathering dust?Tanaka. I have the wolves ready to paint next, hoping to bring them out after lockdown.
Reading anything game or gamer related at present?Always. I buy in as many games as I can afford for research (And sometimes games) purposes. I’m on the Red Book of the Elf King now, as well as “The Dark Side of Japan”, which could be for anything...
Watching anything game or gamer related at present?Everything becomes gamer related. In particular look out for feats taken from Falcon and Winter Soldier and the LEC finals on Bushido models next year!
The Black Eagle has Landed!
After the previews, the images and the year of build-up, we can finally release the returning Daimyo of the Eagle Clan and claimant to rule the Jwar Isles: Shiho Hiroto!
What a profile!A 4 Melee Samurai is an excellent start for anyone, but a Samurai with 3 Ki is fantastic. He can boost his Move, which is also rare (especially for a heavily armoured model), and he has many traits.
Moving Hiroto’s story along from his drunken Master profile proved quite tricky. After turning him into the great Samurai leader he should have been, we noticed he was overperforming his “25 Rice cost” slot we had him in. Even after a few revisions, we got to this point where we can’t take any more away without damaging the profile he should be. So we took the rare step of making a human profile over 25 Rice.
You will have seen Improvise and Kawasu in previous articles so let's look at Overrule. The first thing to note is this is not an opposed ki feat; it just works. This can be a fantastic tool for controlling the flow of the battle and deciding where fights happen and where to delay and harass. Hiroto’s movement is phenomenal, able to boost Move and with Eagle’s Flight Defence, Improvise, Flank and Booted.
Hiroto can go wherever he likes, and you can’t stop him! This also helps activate his Assassin trait (An impolite habit he learned in the less civilised regions of the Empire), making his melee terrifying.
His very name has been striking fear into Takashi hearts, the whole prefecture knows of his return, it has been years in the making, and The Black Eagle does not disappoint; how will you use him in Bushido?
By the pricking of my thumbs…
At the end of every trail of breadcrumbs is a monster, and that monster is usually a witch. There’s something about them that’s almost primordial in a way. I suppose that’s why you’ll find them in the darkest of forests or the grimmest of fairy tales, stealing children or advising a doomed Red King on matters of war.
No matter, beyond the safety of the firelight, is where they dwell, and in Jwar, you can, for an unspeakable price, ask them to aid in another’s suffering. Loremaster Nichiren simply calls it the Ritual of Hate.
There are places in Jwar that you should shun lest you expose yourself to something from beyond your comprehension. There is a darkness that you would not like to find there, a darkness that would no doubt corrupt your very soul if it got inside you.Sites of murder, execution, violence, and areas of great treachery or battle attract those who would do someone harm. Yuta and yokai flock to these places to draw upon the negative energy and corrupted Ki to fuel their fell deeds. The Ritual of Hate takes place on the darkest night of the year before midnight. People who wish someone ill or dead gather at these sites to sacrifice animals, imbibe strong spirits and opium, desecrate graves or tomb markers while dancing naked under the starlight.During the revelry, they should not forget to sing the endless praises of these dark sisters while bowing deeply before them. The ritual requires that the individual you wish harmed or killed be represented by having a piece of their being present such as a nail clipping or strand of their hair. Anything will do, just as long as it either belonged to them or was part of them. It is why those who groom the Emperor burn everything that comes from his body. The pieces are either burnt or ground then mixed with the blood of the Yuta, sake, the blood of a sacrificed animal, more sake, then the soil from someone’s grave. This concoction is drunk while asking the dark spirits to grant you what it is you wish. If successful, the object of your hate should begin to suffer, mysteriously, within days. But remember, not only have you paid the price to the Yuta, you have indebted yourself unwillingly to Yurei, who would see the downfall of us all…
The Yuta of Yurei have made quite a splash since they were available for pre-order for Adepticon 2020. With their shared Ki pool and powerful spells as feats, the Three Sisters have been terrifying Samurai across Jwar.
Three became four as we discovered the terrible sororicide that preceded their bargain with Yurei and the fate of their once beloved sister. Adding the Gashadokuro skeletons to the Cult’s arsenal has been a source of anguish for all opponents of The Cult. In this box, we also see a new named Kairai, Minarai, to offer more options when raising the unquiet dead.
Hikari, in particular, has gained attention as she can use the Yuta’s Chaos Bolt Ki Feat and automatically win the opposed Ki test since she is soulless. This feat is just another trick the cackling warband offers that fleshes out more ways to play them. So, what will be your Ritual of Hate?
Will it be to add more Kairai and allow Josei to take the lead? Or have the unquiet skeletons caught your eye? There’s something dark and delicious for everyone...if you’re willing to pay the price.
Wicked Is As Wicked Does
Akane is a newly-minted Gunso in the Ito army. Akane earned her rank by following orders no matter how callous, wicked or loathsome and if anything, she revelled in allowing her cruelty to come to the fore.
Veteran warriors in the Ito clan who achieve Gunso status receive spears to recognise this achievement. Ito weaponsmiths fashion these lethal weapons with wicked barbs designed to do heinous amounts of damage going in and coming out. Built to lacerate, disembowel and butcher enemy soldiers by causing truly horrific wounds. Akane, ever known for her cruel and sadistic behaviour on the battlefield, delights in using her newly awarded spear to impale her foes on the end of it, then enjoys standing back to watch them die. Even the soldiers under her control stay out of her way as there is just no telling where Akane stops, and her cruelty begins. Ito players will delight in using the BLOOD OF OROCHI trait to give her weapon POISON. This means even a single point of damage in melee will more than half kill most models in the End Phase, even a Minimoto Samurai. Akane is almost undoubtedly useful in any Ito list.
Best of the Web - May
Good day Bushido Fans. It has been a little while but we are back with another “Best of the Web” this time focussing on the great work being posted in the Bushido Discord server.
The first entry we will look at is a great rendition of our biggest model to date; Ryujin from user wintermute2000 (or Darren to his friends) who is also one of the hosts of the great Bushido Cast podcast. I’m sure you will all agree this paint job will make for an awesome centre piece to Darren’s Jung Pirates force.
Next on the slate is a trifecta of the ghoulish yokai Pennangalan.
The first of these comes from user abo/Karim who has opted to use a desaturated blue/green and purple scheme to evoke a muted yet horrifying mood.
User JT has opted to go for a peach kimono on his rendition, which complements the bloody entrails wonderfully! JT has kindly shared links to both Instagram (https://instagram.com/sageminiatures) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/SeizetheMinis) so be sure to check them out for more great work.
While our final Pennangalan may only be a work in progress Doji Meishō is showing off some serious skills! If you’d like to keep up with the progress check out Doji Meishō’s Instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/doji_meisho). In the mean time take a closer look at the skin and that sickly green hue...
Quite why this particular model has taken such a hold over Discord is anyone’s guess, for now let’s just say that Yurei works in mysterious ways!
For our final entry I think we have saved the best to last! Do not adjust your screens, this Open Rebellion (Shiho) Warband has been painted in black and white! User SKROB has taken inspiration from the fantastic films of Akita Kurosawa, such as The Seven Samurai, to create a truly unique force. Hopefully we will see some more Shiho painted in the same way, keep an eye on SKROB’s Instagram account (https://instagram.com/sk_rob) for more!
Unfortunately that is all we have time for this week. Be sure to keep sharing your work and include the hashtags #GCTStudios & #BushidoTheGame where appropriate. Until next time fellow samurai!
