Modification of the NTR computation - Update 2

With the next update of the NTR we'll roll out the first modification, which will reduce the influence of team tournaments. With this update the influence of team tournaments will be reduced mathematical to the same level as the single player events.

Currently a team tournament of size X will grant more points as a single event of the same size. This is based on every team member getting the points of the team's placement. Looking at teams of 3 the first place gets average points for the 1st place ((1+1+1) / 3) while the average of a single event is a 2nd place ((1+2+3) / 3).

The new version will update the formula to match this issue so that every team member will only get the "average points". The placement bonus will also be splitted.

Many thanks to the gamers users who gave us a head sup on this mathematical issue. I couldn't find their names right now. Thanks!

We'll checkout how the rankings will react on this change and decide afterwards wether we need more reduction or not. Due to the modification the NTR won't be calculated automatically in the morning, but during the day so that I can have an eye on what's going on.

Update: Modification is now online.

Update 2: There was an issue with the points on the NTR player pages. The placement bonus was taken into account twice. This was only a display issue. The actual calculation was correct. Thanks to Fenryll for bringing this to our attention.

Upcoming modification of the NTR computation

Based on the running poll about "Team tournaments in the NTR" we're planning to add some modifications to the math behind the rankings.

The current standing of the poll is

* No change: 15%
* No team tournaments: 20%
* Reduced weight: 58%
* No interest: 7%

based on rouhly 350 votes.

So we'll keep the team tournaments in the NTR, but reduce their impact. There are a couple of approaces to do this and we're going to do some math to see how each turns out. Many thanks to everybody who gave some feedback on this.

Working on the math we're (probably) going to simplify the computation a bit and modifiy the weighting factor (WF) so that all 5 results will count as 20% of the final NTR points. This has to be checked with some calculations first.

Tournament Awards 2011

It took a couple of weeks this year, but they finally arrived. We just awarded the best tournaments of the year 2011. We congratulate all winners on their awesome events. The average level was really high and there have been some narrow decisions.

We also know that the rating categories still need some improvements. It's still on our wishlist, but there's just no time for it.

NTR and team tournaments

Hey community,

based on the fresh feedback I've reverted the latest change to the NTR and would like to take the chance for a discussion on what should happen with the rankings.

Everybody can check his profile and see the difference between the two variants as the placement without team tournaments is taken as the "old" one.

There are now a couple of possibilites:

1. Don't change anything
Hmm... nobody wants that probably... but it's possible.

2. Ignore team tournaments
Hmm... nobody wants that probably too.

3. Reduce weight of team tournaments
Yes, the current influence of team tournaments isn't optimal. Nobody said this and it's still the first draft since the day the team tournaments came up. And nobody "complained" since then.

4. Separate single and team tournaments
This is possible, but I don't think it's a good solution. A ranking based only on the team results doesn't have any informative value as the results with changing team sizes and members would be totally random.

5. Drop NTR
If we cannot find a nice agreement which is ok for everybody, we also just can remove the rankings at all.

IMPORTANT: I'm looking for a general, international solution for all our tabletops and supported countries. The NTR is from the start on not bound to any single game. I won't implement seperate rankings for the games and countries. We still can talk about additional rankings (like the upcoming French "No Limit").

I just started a anonymous poll and ask you kindly to participate. We need as much feedback as possible on this to reflect the point of view of the T³ users. Please also vote if you're not interested in the NTR at all.

Happy gaming
Blacky

NTR 2012 without team tournaments - Update

With the latest update to the NTR algorithm (v2.8) we're going to test this year how the rankings develop without the impact of team tournaments. There have been a bunch on controverse discussions on their influence and we'll check this out now. Keep in mind that this can easily be reverted as no results will get lost.

We'll keep an eye on the rankings and would like to get feedback from the community no this. There are a couple of things which could improve the NTR, but we're going to stick to small iterations like before.

Update: I just reverted the change due to the overwhelming feedback. Everbody can see the difference between the two variants in his NTR profile as the "team tournament"-less placement is marked as the previous placement.

I'll start a discussion on how to solve this issue.
