The aim of this pack is to provide an alternative set of composition restrictions to those in the Matched Play Guide, which curb the most dominating and negative-play combinations while promoting list diversity and encouraging a more engaging experience for all players. This pack seeks to foster a healthy competitive environment where skill, strategy, and sportsmanship take precedence over exploitative builds or one-dimensional tactics. It is not perfect. We will aim to keep improving it with regular updates. We do listen to feedback, so please do get in touch and let us know your thoughts. These composition restrictions are designed to be used in combination of the Grand Melee/Combined Arms restrictions from the Matched Play Guide.

General Restrictions

● No more than 35% of your points (rounded up) may be spent on characters.
● No more than 30% of your points (rounded up) may be spent on character and non-character units with the Fly (X) special rule.[1]
● No more than 25% of your points (rounded up) may be spent on a single unit; no more than 25% of your Unit Strength (rounded up) may be in a single unit.[2]
● No duplication of magic items across the army list, even if extremely common.[3]
● No more than 2 of each War Machine - all bolt throwers count as 0.5 warmachines
● No more than 1 of each Rare choice.[4]
● No more than 2 instances of a spell per army including bound spells.
● No more than 3 magic missiles per army.

Army List Bonuses
The Square Based renegade pack is being used. In addition, the following changes are applied:

May spend an additional 200 points on their army list:
○ Dark Elves, Lizardmen, Daemons of Chaos & Skaven.
At game end, reduce opponent Victory Points gained from destroyed, depleted, or fleeing units by 10% (multiply total points x0.91).
No effect on Victory Points gained from other sources (e.g. Objectives, The King is Dead, Trophies of War, etc.).

Army Specific Restrictions

Beastmen
Maximum casting modifier of +3.

Bretonia
Green Knight and Lady Duchard count as flying.
Green Knight cannot charge in the same turn it is placed on the table.

Cathay
Sky Lanterns may not be taken as character mounts.[5]
Cathay Ogre loaders count as an additional warmachine of the type they are bought with.

Dwarves
Maximum of 6 flying models.

Empire
Maximum of 12 Outriders

O&G
Maximum of 5 fanatics.

Tomb Kings
May not take the Armour of Ages on a Bone Dragon.
Icon of Rakaph cannot be used to pursue into a new enemy.
Max 3 resurrect the fallen per round, per player.
May have a maximum of 8 of the following: ushabti with bow, casket of souls, Scroll of Withering.

Vampire Counts
May take 0-2 units with the Wailing Dirge special rule.
Max 3 resurrect the fallen per round, per player.
Grave Guard max. unit size: 20 models.
Wight Lords may not take the Battle Standard upgrade.


[1] Characters able to cast spells which grant Fly (X) do not count; units that can sometimes fly based on their abilities or magic items (e.g. Miao Ying or a character with the Flying Carpet) do count.
[2] During list construction; once on the table, characters may join units as you please.
[3] Multiple Obsidian Lodestones on a single model count as a single item.
[4] If a Rare unit can be taken in another section of the army list, such as a Cathayan Sentinel, they still count as your one copy of that rare choice. Rare units that have been taken as a mount do not count towards this limit (i.e. you may have a Great Eagle as a rare choice and a Noble mounted on a Great Eagle).
[5] This means Cathay cannot take more than one Sky Lantern in total
